Remnants #1, 2019, watercolour on archival pigment print

Boxcopy (QLD) presents
Remnants of my ancestors ~ Sancintya Mohini Simpson

Remnants of my ancestors draws from Sancintya Mohini Simpson’s maternal history of indentured labour to explore how, along with culture and tradition, memories and trauma are also passed down to the next generation, shaping who we are. In this immersive video work, Simpson uses the landscape and poetry to narrate an ongoing journey uncovering this familial history. Reflecting on the history of her family, taken from South India to Natal as indentured labourers during the late 1800s and throughout the early 1900s, Simpson inserts her mother and self into the narrative, acknowledging this history’s impact on them today.

This exhibition is presented by BOXCOPY (Brisbane) as part of HOBIENNALE 2019. In its second year, this biennial arts festival brings together 21 artist-run initiatives (ARIs) and 100 emerging artists for ten days of some of the most interesting, critical and diverse exhibitions, music, performances and talks from across Australia and New Zealand.

Please join us for the opening event on Sunday 17th of November from 4pm at the Rosny Farm.
